Azza Sawungrana

Spatial Engineering ITC, University of Twente

Hi there! I’m Azza (Azzadiva) Sawungrana, a head of geospatial currently based in Enschede, NL.

With 6+ years of experience in geospatial technology and products, I specialise in solving spatial-related problems for sectors like retail, finance, and sustainability. I wish to make geospatial tools and data accessible and impactful – whether optimising business expansions or designing inclusive urban solutions.

Experience

Head of Geospatial, Geosquare.ai(June 2024 – Now)

Spearheaded the development of a proprietary local grid system for Indonesia, achieving significantly enhanced accuracy (More accurate 100 million times ~ Coefficient of Variation: 2.00 x 10^-8) compared to existing standards (Geohash, S2, H3).

Leveraged the new grid system to generate diverse spatial datasets for various applications. Pioneered the creation of a high-resolution (50×50 sqm) dasymmetric demographic map of Indonesia, providing a substantial improvement over traditional village-level data.

Engineered a land appraisal model that reduced appraisal time for Indonesian banks and a regional revenue agency from 7 days to under one minute

Developed a novel, high-resolution (30 arcsec) GDP PPP model for Indonesia

Helped a national expansion plan for an Indonesian coffee chain and the biggest bank of Indonesia

Geospatial Data Analyst Intern, Van Lanschot Kempen(May 2025 – July 2025)

As a Geospatial Intern with the SDG Farmland Fund at Van Lanschot Kempen, I applied my skills in Spatial Information Science, Technical Engineering, and Spatial Planning & Governance to address challenges in sustainable farm management and reporting. I collaborated closely with portfolio managers and external consultants to understand information requirements for their global farm assets. My work involved evaluating current data systems, defining use cases for improved geospatial analytics, and developing conceptual solutions for more efficient data visualisation and reporting, ultimately aiming to support the fund’s sustainability objectives and investment strategies.

Urban Planning Student Assistant (Research Project) (Part Time), VU Amsterdam & University of Twente in collaboration with UrbanistAI (Sep 2024 – Now)

Collaborated on AI-powered tools to map Enschede’s green/blue spaces, integrating feedback from vulnerable communities through participatory workshops.

Developed workshop protocols and materials as well as interactive dashboards (Python, QGIS) to visualise urban design scenarios for climate-resilient neighbourhoods.

Lead Product Manager and Product Specialist, Bhumi Varta Technology (Mar 2019 – Apr 2023)

Spearheaded development of LOKASI Intelligence, a web-based geospatial analytics platform serving 50+ Indonesian enterprises in retail, banking, and FMCG sectors.

Launched Version 2.0: Streamlined UX/UI reduced client onboarding time by 30% and increased platform adoption by 45% post-pandemic.

Scaled DevOps workflows: Cut feature deployment cycles from 14 to 3 days, enabling rapid response to market changes.

Geospatial Data Analyst, Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs of Indonesia (Mar 2017 – Jan 2018)

Compiled national-scale permission maps for mining and agriculture, resolving 15+ inter-ministerial data conflicts.

Streamlined permission data integration of 4 ministries and government agencies.

Remote Sensing & GIS Labs Assistant, Universitas Gadjah Mada (Jan 2016 – Jun 2016)

(Held concurrent roles across 4 labs – streamlined for brevity)

Trained 150+ students in Python-based DEM analysis, drone photogrammetry, and disaster mapping (QGIS/ArcGIS).

Automated lahar flow modeling workflows using ASTER GDEM data, cutting processing time by 90% for early lahar hazard assessments.

Co-authored a paper on remote sensing for land capability index presented at ICOIRS 2015.

Other experiences

Product Strategist, Nusadventure (Feb 2018 – May 2019)

Launched 3 eco-tourism products promoting sustainable travel in Indonesia, achieving 85% customer satisfaction via community-driven itineraries.

Created digital marketing campaigns that increased website traffic by 200% within 6 months.

English Instructor, E Fun English Institute (Jan 2016 – Jul 2016)

Taught business and academic English to 50+ adult learners, with 90% achieving target proficiency scores for university/job applications.

Designed a conversational English curriculum still used by the institute for professional training programs.
